Learn how to safely replace a Duromatic pressure cooker handle with a genuine Kuhn Rikon part. Step-by-step guide for ERGO, Supreme, and CLASSIC NEO models.
Quick answer
You can replace a loose or worn Duromatic handle by removing the old screw, fitting the new handle, and tightening the screw to a secure but not over-torqued level. Use a genuine Kuhn Rikon replacement handle for a safe, lasting fit.
Before you start: choose the right handle
The Duromatic line includes several handle designs. The DUROMATIC® ERGO/GOURMET handle (matte black screw) offers a modern ergonomic grip and is compatible with Duromatic ERGO and Gourmet bodies. The DUROMATIC® Supreme handle (also with matte screw) is a more streamlined option for Supreme pressure cookers. For 20/22 cm pots, the DUROMATIC® CLASSIC NEO handle is the correct match. Using the wrong model can leave the handle loose or misaligned.
All three handles are genuine Swiss-made Kuhn Rikon parts, so you can expect the same fit and finish as the original. The screw is included with each handle, which simplifies the swap.
When to replace versus tighten
If the handle wobbles but the screw is tight, the plastic or metal may have fatigued. Replacing the handle is safer than overtightening, which can strip the screw or crack the handle. If the screw is stripped or missing, a new handle with a fresh screw is the only reliable fix.
Step-by-step handle replacement
- Remove the old handle: Turn the pot upside down. Use a screwdriver (usually a Phillips head) to unscrew the existing handle screw. Keep the screw if it's in good condition, but you will likely use the new one included with the replacement handle. If the screw is stuck, apply a drop of penetrating oil and wait 5 minutes. Do not force it.
- Align the new handle: Place the new handle against the pot body so the screw hole lines up with the threaded boss on the pot. Ensure the handle sits flush and is oriented correctly (the curved side should face outward). A handle that is not flush can cause the screw to cross-thread. Double-check alignment before inserting the screw.
- Insert and tighten the screw: Insert the new screw through the handle and into the pot body. Tighten it by hand until snug, then give it a quarter turn with the screwdriver. Do not overtighten. Overtightening can crack the handle or strip the threads. Stop as soon as you feel resistance.
- Test the handle: Grip the handle and gently rock it side to side. It should feel solid with no play. If it wobbles, remove the handle and check for debris or misalignment, then retighten. If the handle still wobbles after retightening, the pot's threaded boss may be damaged. Consult a Kuhn Rikon service center.
